Telephone Preference Services

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.

This scam has been verified by a retired police officer who it actually happened to.  Having notified my Neighbourhood watch, it was also established that an attempt had occurred to at least three other people.  This is the basis of the scam.

You are called by a person purporting to be from Visa about fraudulent entries on your debit card. They ask you to call back on the number on the back of your card but actually hold the line open so you just get back to them.  They then ask a number of questions to get your bank/credit card details as you believe you're speaking to your bank.  They may ask you to transfer an amount of money to another account for 'safety'.

On this particular occasion the 'victim' became suspicious hung up and rang the bank on another line who confirmed it was a scam.

If you get a call - do ring the number on  the back of your card but from a different phone.
